The idea that the universe had a beginning and is evolving over time is one of the most profound and startling discoveries of modern science. However, the question of the origin of the universe has much older roots: philosophers, theologians, and scientists have addressed it through the centuries, each with different tools, but driven by the same desire: to understand where we come from, where we are going, and why we exist.
